The Society operates a low-cost, full-service animal clinic and hospital staffed by three veterinarians. We perform exams and vaccinations on a walk-in basis and offer x-rays and surgery (including spaying and neutering) when an appointment is made at the time of an exam during our walk in clinic hours.

Kindly note prices and estimates listed below go into effect February 23, 2010.

Clinic Hours are:

Saturday

7:30am-3:30pm  (If you arrive early in the day, be prepared to spend 2-3 hours at our facility. If you arrive late in the day, be prepared to either be turned away because of the volume of clients already waiting or you may be seen after little waiting because others did not want to risk being turned away.  Also kindly note that the closing times are the time that the vets are scheduled to end their examination of animals, so plan to arrive at least a half hour before this time to accommodate the records prep and exam time.)

When you visit, sign in at the front desk. If you visit in the morning, there will be two clip boards. One clipboard is for clients dropping off their pets for surgery and the other for clients needing veterinarian or technician services. Tech services include nail trim, suture removal, or ongoing blood work, food pick up, prescription refill. Clients are seen in the following order:

1. Emergencies involving the animal being in discomfort. You may be referred to a specialist.

2. Animals being dropped off for their scheduled surgery. Allow 30-60 minutes for a surgery drop off. You will accompany your pet to the exam and take your pet home if the animal is showing signs of illness.

3. Animals not requiring the service of the vets are serviced by technicians in between the technicians setting up clients for their veterinary exams.

4. Animals that need to see the vet for an exam, vaccinations, or those showing non-emergency symptoms of an illness.

Our pricing reflects our commitment to our animal welfare mission. Exam fees are $25 effective March 1, 2009 and remain this price through the February 2010 changes. There is no multi-pet discount. We are not in a position to offer free care, a payment plan, or vouchers/grants for other vets' services. We accept cash, Visa, Mastercard, and personal checks with ID and sufficient funds in the account when the check is run through our Instacheck system.

If your animal is showing symptoms of an illness, bring them in early in the day. A surprising number of people call to report growing concern over several days' worth of symptoms late in the day when we can not accommodate them. The only responsible recommendation we can make over the phone is to direct you to an emergency veterinary center where the exam fee is approximately $100.00.

We recommend puppies receiving their first vaccines visit early in the day so if there is a negative reaction, you may return during clinic hours as opposed to incurring the emergency veterinary center fees for reactions that occur after the clinic is closed. You are responsible for any fees to other veterinarians.

The Society is now offering canine influenza vaccine injections in our veterinary clinic. Your dog will need 2 shots, given 2 weeks apart to be completely protected from canine influenza. Shots cost $26 each for a total cost of $52. There are also separate $25 examination fees for both the initial visit and the second visit.

Canine influenza is a contagious respiratory virus. Dogs affected with a mild case of the canine flu may develop a moist cough that lasts 10 to 30 days. Some dogs will have a dry cough that may be mistaken for kennel cough. In some cases, a bacterial infection occurs with mild cases of the flu and can cause a thick nasal discharge.

Dogs that have the severe form of canine influenza may develop fevers between 104 to 106 degrees and may also develop pneumonia if a secondary bacterial infection occurs.

Canine influenza is a fairly new disease and very few dogs have developed any immunity to the virus. According to American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) guidelines, virtually all dogs exposed to the virus become infected and nearly 80 percent show clinic signs of the disease.

A stool check for parasites is $18.00. Please bring a sample from home. The price of wormer to treat intestinal parasites varies.

An X-ray appointment is typically made for a Saturday, and the fees begin at $125.00. Additional costs will be assessed if anesthesia is required.

Heartworm medication can not be started without a negative heartworm test on all animals over 5 months of age. The price of heatworm medications varies according to the animal's weight. Unlike medications purchased through mail order services, all of our medications are backed by the manufacturers

All prescriptions require an exam. If our records suggest a lapse in heartworm preventive treatment, we will not provide a prescription until a blood test is performed to confirm the animal is heartworm-free.

There is a $10 service charge for records and mail order prescription requests. Again, kindly note that drug manufacturers do not stand behind the medications provided through most mail order companies.

The following surgery fees apply to dogs under the age of 6 months. These prices should be considered a starting price for animals over 6 months of age. An estimate will be provided by the vet at the walk-in clinic exam. The final price can not be provided until the day of surgery when any complications or needs such as an Elizabethan collar can be realized. All animals must have up-to-date rabies and distemper vaccines at the time of surgery. The total for the exam and these two vaccines at the time of an walk in clinic visit is $63.00.

WE CANNOT EMPHASIZE ENOUGH THAT PRICING ON THIS PAGE IS A GOOD FAITH EFFORT TO GIVE YOU A REALISTIC EXPECTATION OF A STARTING POINT. PRICING ON THIS PAGE CANNOT AND WILL NOT CONSTITUTE A GUARANTEE ON THE FINAL PRICE FOR SURGERY DUE ON THE DATE OF SURGERY.

Spay and neuter surgeries are by appointment only. Animals must first be evaluated during a walk-in appointment before surgery will be scheduled.

If an animal is pregnant, has been through a heat cycle or is in heat, or advanced in age, additional charges will be required for surgery. If the exam reveals a fever, swollen glands or liver, and any heart or respiratory irregularities, additional testing, fees, or treatment may be required to ensure the animal is well enough for surgery. Blood work at a cost of $61.00 is recommended on elderly or infirm animals prior to any surgery.

A deposit of $25.00 is required at the time of scheduling. If it is necessary to cancel an appointment for an operation for your pet, you must notify the Women’s Humane Society clinic (215-750-5252) at least 48 hours in advance of the surgery to receive credit for the $25 deposit. Failure to do so will result in the forfeiture of the deposit. If the surgery is scheduled for a Tuesday, you must call the clinic to cancel the surgery by the Saturday before the surgery. The Women’s Humane Society clinic and hospital are closed on Sunday and Monday.

Our clinic vets will perform the euthanasia procedure for active clinic clients (we maintain active records for 3 years). You will pay the $25.00 office visit fee and clinic euthanasia procedure prices begin at $61.00 for an animal up to 25 pounds. This fee increases as the weight increases. We can dispose of the body as part of this fee. We contract for cremation services at another facility. You may request an individual cremation for fees starting at $185.00 for an animal up to 5 pounds. This fee also increases as the weight increases.

If you are not an active client in our clinic, the shelter is available to perform the euthanasia procedure for a fee starting at $50.00 for an animal up to 25 pounds. Additional euthanasia prices are available on the 'Giving Up an Animal' page via the 'Surrender Hours and Costs link' on that page. You will surrender your pet, pay the fee, and leave or wait in the lobby while the procedure is performed by the shelter vet. If you wish to view your pet's body following the procedure, this can be accomodated. If you wish to be with your pet for the procedure and are not a client of our clinic, consult with your vet for this procedure.

This page is designed to answer frequently asked questions. If you have additional procedural questions, feel free to email us at whshelpline@aol.com. Keep in mind that no one but a vet can responsibly suggest a diagnosis, course of treatment for medical symptoms and related costs, or evaluate differing opinions from other vets. This can not be done without an examination of the animal so plan to visit the walk-in clinic as opposed to emailing or calling with pricing, diagnosis or treatment questions. Phone access to our veterinarians will be denied to any individual without an active file at our clinic.

We make every effort to keep pet adoption and ownership affordable to our community members. This being said, we continue to be available to our community because of the donations and fees collected by our organization. We have no animal control contracts so we receive no tax payer dollars. Just as the lean ecomony has impacted those needing our services, those donating to sustain our services are feeling the pain as well.

We will continue to balance affordability and fulfilling our mission to prevent abuse and neglect through comprehensive animal welfare services that include our clinic, hospital, sheltering and adoptions, humane education, dog obedience classes, cruelty investigations, an animal ambulance service for surrendered animals, and a volunteer program.
