Greater DelMarPa Coalition of Humane Educators
The Greater DelMarPa Coalition of Humane Educators evolved from a previously organized group of animal welfare agencies and societies in the 1980s, who were dedicated to the concept of promoting the humane ethic through education. With positive changes towards the public awareness of (a) animal control, (b) humane societies and (c) organizations dedicated to serving animals in specific ways, educators representing groups in the tri-state area of Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania gathered in the spring of 1990 and formed this coalition.
The coalition has been very successful in supporting humane efforts within our immediate area, and with that success has come growth. We have expanded our membership to Virginia, New Jersey and New York, and also have consultants from several other states. That expansion, coupled with our affiliation with the Association of Professional Humane Educators (2000), prompted us to add Greater to our organization's title.
The Greater DelMarPa Coalition meets 4 times per year, once each in Delaware and Pennsylvania and twice in Maryland. The agenda for each meeting is agreed upon through members and facilitators, and state facilitators provide mailings to notify participants of dates, agendas and directions. Mailing costs are paid by each state facilitator.
Greater DelMarPa acts as a network of professional and volunteer humane educators involved in similar work. It is our goal to support each other in the sharing of material, ideas, projects and insightful teaching. There is no distinction between the paid and the volunteer position, as all are joined in the common goal of humane education. Towards that end, each and every member, participant or guest of the group, remains positive and no comments or remarks of a disparaging nature are permitted.
New members to the coalition are welcome, but need to be invited by a state facilitator (see below) or current member, and be introduced to the membership by that person. The diversity of our group is testament to the fact that education prevails on all levels. By networking and maintaining a professional level of educational programming, we expect to continue to be a respected and dedicated organization, saving the lives of animals while serving the needs of people, as we all inhabit, love and care for our planet Earth.
